Founded as Contoocook in 1732, this community was incorporated as Boscawen in 1760. The original name comes from a river of the same name, while its current name is in honor of Edward Boscawen, an English admiral who fought under General Amherst during the conquering of Canada. The admiral was behind the taking of the fortress at Lousbourg, Nova Scotia. In 1739, the Coontoocook Fort on the Merrimack, one of the earliest forts built to shelter residents from Native Americans, was built here. In 1997, the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery was established on 104 acres of land previously used as a state forest.
